Welcome to Wind Reefs

Offshore wind turbines will play a key role in generating clean, carbon-free energy.  However, they also have the potential to make a significant, positive contribution to the marine environment.  The steel and concrete used for their foundations, whether fixed or floating, can act as artificial reefs providing structure and shelter for macro algae, invertebrates, mollusks, fish and other benthic organisms.

By 2050, between 5-10% of the North Sea is likely to be covered by offshore wind farms.  That’s a big artificial reef!  Globally these "wind reefs" will be even larger. WindReefs.com will be dedicated to research into the design, construction and management of offshore wind farms required to realize this vision.
